QUEENSTOWN WINTER TENS KAPA HAKA COMPETITION 2016 INFORMATION

Kia Ora Whānau

Kapa Haka Competition day is fast approaching - Saturday 27 August!

Below is key information from the organizers and myself on what the students need to do on the day.

About the Performance Day

Winter 10s is a special Kapa Haka event right here in Queenstown. It is an amazing event and nothing like you have ever seen before.
There are 2 categories in this competition:
  • Traditional Junior section - This year there are 5 Junior groups performing(four roopu from Tahuna(Queenstown) and one from Ōtepoti(Dunedin)
  • Contemporary Adult section. There will be 6 Contemporary Adult groups performing. The adult groups take kapa haka to a whole new level, weaving stories and tales throughout their unique bracket of items that is reflected in their original kākahu and costume ideas. Only 10 adults on stage per group (hence the name - Winter 10s).

This is the third year Winter 10s has been running in Queenstown, it is likely to draw a large crowd so you will need to get in early to secure your seats. You are able to come and go throughout the day. It is a koha(donation) entry this year for adults.

Friday 26 August is stage check at the Memorial Hall:

It is essential that all students intending to perform attend the stage check at the Memorial Hall, so they can become familiar with the proceedings prior to the event.
  • Parents will need to transport students to and from the stage check and are welcome to stay during this time. If you are unable to transport your child to Memorial hall, please contact myself as I may be able to assist
  • Each student needs to wear their school tracksuit into the Memoria Hall sound/stage check
  • Stage check times: Students to meet inside the hall by stage at the following times
  • 5:00pm - 5:30pm - TUAKANA (Senior) group
Our stage check time is short so please ensure your child is there on time.
After the performance they will go to the changing room and change back into their school track suit.
Saturday 27 August 'Performance Day' Instructions

THE COMPETITION IS ONLY TWO WEEKS AWAY WHĀNAU!

Kia ora whānau,

Our first competition of the year is only two weeks away and we need to make every moment with their tutors count.

Tetuhi is employed to spend 1.5 hours per week with our very fortunate students and that is it.  Any other time he spends with them such as the two weekend wananga, is for love.  We were very surprised to see so many of our boys missing from rehearsal this afternoon with no warning whatsoever from any of our whānau.

The boys were supposed to be working with Tetuhi this afternoon on their rakau and haka but he was unable to do this as he was left with 6 boys from the squad.

A quick email a few days before would certainly go along way when it comes to the planning of the rehearsal at such a crucial time.

Thank you whānau.
